(Atlantic) The youth turkey hunting season begins April 5th, which means it’s time for youth to start thinking about signing up for a hunter safety course.
“Iowa hunters born after January 1, 1972 are required to have successfully completed the hunter safety course and receive their hunter safety certificate,” said Bryan Hayes, with the DNR Office in Lewis. “The hunter education courses are open to students 12 years and older, but we would also let kids in that are 11, but their certificate does not become valid until their 12th birthday.”
Bryan Hayes, with the DNR Office in Lewis, says youth who do not take the course or are younger than 12 years old can still hunt if they are accompanied by an adult, but they will need to take a hunter safety course when it’s time to go out and purchase a license and hunt on their own. Hayes said at age 16 you are required to have a license.
