(Des Moines) Authorities in eastern Iowa are warning residents about a phone scam.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Office says a resident was recently contacted by a suspicious caller. The caller claimed there was a warrant out for the residents arrest and demanded money to dismiss it. The resident was instructed by the caller to go to a local store and purchase a money card to settle a $400 fee. A vigilant store clerk stopped the resident.
Authorities say no law enforcement agency would request a money card from a person in that circumstance. A Des Moines man was scammed just last month after a call came to his home to say his granddaughter was in jail and he needed money to pay her bail and her court costs. All fines must be paid at the Clerk of Courts office.
