(Des Moines) The State Auditor is calling on Iowa lawmakers and the Governor today to maintain “fiscal discipline” when it comes to crafting the state budget.
Mary Mosiman released her analysis of the Governor’s budget proposals. The Auditor says there are two budgeting decisions she’s questioning.
“The Governor’s proposed budget potentially underfunds Medicaid by 19 million dollars,” said Mosiman. “And I realize that Medicaid spending is a moving target, but it is a good budgeting practice to use the best estimate available. This budget falls at least 19 million dollars short of the best reported estimate for Medicaid spending.”
And, secondly, Auditor Mosiman says under the Governor’s budget proposal, salaries and benefits will have to be absorbed out of agencies operating budgets again for the sixth straight year. She says that practice will affect state services at some point.
