(Griswold) Inside the metal walls of a large building in the quiet countryside east of Griswold a manufacturing business is busy producing quality products for the agriculture nation.
Schuler Manufacturing and Equipment Company is a family owned corporation that began in 1964. The business started inside of a remodeled chicken house and has expanded over the years to manufacture cattle feed mixers, feed wagons, and other feed mixer equipment for the beef cattle feedlot and dairy industries.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, who grew up on a cattle feeding farm, toured Schuler Manufacturing today and he said with the way things have changed over the years it was amazing to see what Schuler is doing.
“A lot of things start with a farmer or somebody else wanting to do something a little bit better and as they mentioned they couldn’t find exactly the feed wagon they were looking for so they thought they would make it,” said Northey. “Sometimes we don’t realize how innovative Iowa farmers are and you come to something like this and you can’t help but be very, very impressed.”
Northey said it is an interesting time in agriculture with some great opportunities for the industry.
“We’ve had some better incomes the last few years, I think we’re seeing an opportunity to grow our livestock business as well so hopefully more demand for the Schuler’s of the world in that area, and then the technology that is a part of this; the ability to understand exactly what you’re mixing and get those rations just right or adjust it based on what you need is pretty amazing,” stated Northey. “People driving by look at the walls here and know that there is some folks working inside but have no idea how much technology there is here and then how advanced this is compared to others in the industry.”
Schuler manufacturing is located at 63724 Richland Road east of Griswold. The business spans three generations and employs over 40 workers.
