(West Branch) A six-day old baby missing from the town of Beloit, Wisconsin was found alive in eastern Iowa.
Police Chief Steven Kopp says the baby was discovered by an officer checking along I-80 near West Branch, Iowa this morning. He says the officer heard the newborn crying and discovered the child alive, swaddled in a tote bag outside of a gas station. Kopp says he called in federal assistance when the baby went missing early Thursday.
“We called the FBI and the Wisconsin Department of Justice right away because they had the resources to get this kind of investigation underway,” said Kopp.
Authorities say the baby’s 18-year-old mother called 911 after waking about 4:30 a.m. Thursday to find the child, Kayden Powell, missing from his bassinette in a room where the mother was sleeping. A relative may be a person of interest, but no charges have been filed in the case. The baby was taken to an Iowa hospital.
