(Des Moines) “Enough is enough”, that seems to be the message as a State Senator’s offering a bill to put more review and control on outside legal fees for the Iowa Executive Council. Cedar Rapids Democrat Rob Hogg says nearly half a million dollars spent to represent the Governor in a civil rights complaint is too much.
“The legal fees in the Godfrey case, I don’t have quite all of them, but I added it up last night and my math said I got about 435,000 dollars in legal fees in a case that hasn’t even gone to trial yet and that does seem grossly disproportionate and excessive,” said Hogg.
But, West Des Moines Republican Charles Schneider says those expenditures are already a matter of public record.
“There are plenty of political costs, I guess, that the executive branch pays for having to use outside council because of the public scope of this information,” said Schneider.
But, the Senate study bill advancing through sub-committee this morning and is now eligible for debate before the full judiciary committee. Hogg chairs that committee and eh says he’ll discuss possible refinements before he decides whether he brings it up for a vote.
