(Des Moines) A bill toughening state penalties for animal abuse advancing to the full house judiciary committee today. Wilton Republican Bobby Kauffman is the bill's sponsor. He says,
"I think that penalties currently that exist do not match the crime and so I put forth this bill to raise awareness and to help prevent animal abuse."
But, Polk County Democrat Rick Olson didn't sign on to advance the bill saying,
"Candidly I'm a no vote. I don't like the statute to begin with when you criminalize negligent conduct, i think that in itself is something that needs to be addressed."
But, the bill got the necessary signatures to advance.
Supporters say a recent case this week of an apparently neglected pit bull who had eaten another dog to stay alive adds some extra urgency to their cause.
