(Ames) For more than a decade Iowans have used www.511ia.org to check road conditions before making travel plans and now the Iowa DOT is expanding the use of camera’s to show the road conditions.
Over the years the Iowa Department of Transportation has been adding cameras to 511 to allow people to actually see camera images of exactly what the road looks like at any given moment.
The Iowa DOT has recently added cameras on two commuter corridors: Interstate 35 from Ankeny to Ames and U.S. 30 from Ames to Nevada. Additional cameras on U.S. 30 from Boone to Ames should come online in the next month. These cameras provide streaming video and still images.
Like the other DOT cameras on the system, the images and video are not used for law enforcement or currently recorded.
