(Des Moines) Iowa’s aging workforce may pose some problems in the futures.
“Over the next decade we’re going to have more people retiring than coming into the workforce and so we’re going to struggle to hold onto labor force growth,” said Dave Swensen, ISU Economist. “And, that’s going to inhibit our ability to grow and to be competitive in the Midwest.”
Swensen says complicating matters, a domino-type exodus; that is rural Iowa loses workers to bigger cities, and even larger regional cities pull medium skilled workers out of state.
Swensen made the comments at an economic panel hosted by the Des Moines-based Business Record.
