(Des Moines) A bill regulating the use of drones in Iowa stalled last year, but lawmakers are reviving the bill in a public safety sub-committee this afternoon. Representative Jason Schultz says it’s new technology that’s not covered by existing law.
“This is a technology that can be used for good and I’m hearing back from some Iowa citizens who say they have a legitimate use for this. We want to make sure that technology is available to the citizen, but that it is not used as a tool of abuse.”
The Schleswig Republican says he’s hearing nationally about some cases of “peeping toms” using the drones. Schultz says he also wants to make sure that government agencies can’t fly drones over your property just on the off chance you’re breaking some rules.
He says his drone regulation bill would be a chance for lawmakers to get ahead of the curve. Schultz says he doesn’t want some abuse to get revealed and have to scramble after the fact.
