(Washington D.C.) Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is praising President Obama for announcing in his State of the Union address that he is requiring federal contractors to pay their employees at least $10.10 an hour.
Harkin says now is the time for Congress to act, something he acknowledges isn’t easy to do right now.
“You know we used to agree in this country that if you worked hard and played by the rules, you could earn enough money to support your family, keep a roof over head, put some money away for a rainy day and have a secure retirement,” stated Harkin. “The minimum wage played a critical role in doing that. Which is why the President and both parties in the past have supported fair increases in the minimum wage?”
Harkin is co-sponsor of Senate legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. He took the Senate floor to urge his colleagues to approve the bill and send it to the House for action.
