(Des Moines) A subcommittee of the Republican-controlled Iowa House Wednesday approved a bill that would add three cents a gallon to the price of gas this year…another three cents a gallon next year…and four cents in 2016.
The House Transportation Committee approved the bill after hearing from road builders; county supervisor’s and farm groups in favor of raising the tax to fix roads.
House Transportation Committee Chairman Josh Byrnes says he supports the tax increase because there is little else that can be done.
“I think the state of Iowa has done a great job of coming up with a system to fund our infrastructure,” stated Byrnes. “The D-O-T has been efficient in the projects that have been completed and if you look at the efficiencies that we have asked of them over the last few years, they have matched or exceeded what we have asked them to do. So I don’t buy the argument that we have a lot of inefficiencies in the D-O-T and that we are building things we should not be building.”
Leaders in both the Iowa House and Senate admit the bill doesn’t have a strong chance of passage in this election year.
