(Des Moines) The new state program to provide medical insurance to low income Iowans launched at the beginning of the year. Today, lawmakers got an update on the Iowa Health and Wellness plan from the head of Medicaid services in Iowa.
Jennifer Vermeer of DHS says the goal is to incentivize healthy behaviors.
“No premiums are charged the entire first year, the other thing the person could do is just complete their healthy behaviors and their premium is waived for the entire second year,” explained Vermeer.
Vermeer says they’re dealing with a population that may have never had health insurance before, so the healthy behaviors required for the first year are: a physical and a health risk assessment. She says the goal is to establish a relationship between their clients and their doctors.
