(State) A heads-up for cell phone users in Iowa...Scammers have cooked up yet another way to get your money. It's not a sales pitch. In fact, there's no one on the line! It's called the "One-Ring" scam, because once your phone rings, they disconnect, in hopes you will call back. In doing so, you're calling what is known as a "Premium Rate" number, that racks up huge charges on your bill and the scammers get part of the money. There is an 'App' called Truecaller, based in Sweden, that bills itself as the world's largest verified phone number community, where users can enter a number and get the name and details of the owner.
"We could actually see in our systems that we had tons of uses in countries around us that started to report phone numbers like foreign numbers as spam."
Alan Mamedi is the C-E-O of Truecaller, and says their "Crowd-Source" community is able to get the word out quickly, using the free app.
