(Des Moines) There's a bone marrow drive today at the John R. Grubb YMCA in Des Moines, in honor of 16-year-old Isaiah Newsome. His mother Charice Williams says her son suffers from Sickel Cell Anemia.
"We are doing this to create two things, one, just more awareness and then two, to try and find a match for him for bone marrow transfusion."
She says bone marrow transplants in sickel cell patients are proving to be very promising. She admits finding a match will be difficult, especially given her son's African American ethnicity, but if the marrow drive results in a match-for some patient, somewhere in the world, it could be life-changing. The event is all day Monday at the John R. Grubb YMCA, -there's also a blood drive at the same time.
