(Iowa City) Iowa City Officials are warning residents about a telephone scam, involving people who claim to be with the Internal Revenue Service. Christopher miller of the I-R-S says it's a familiar scheme, and it's one that has popped up in every state. The scammers use a number of tricks, including a program to make "I-R-S" appear on your caller I-D.
"It seems so real when they are able to use systems that make it seem like the call is coming from the IRS and then they threaten deportation, or arrest, or suspension of your driver's or business lisence. This is definitely one that taxpayers want to be on the lookout for."
He says the IRS will never ask for payments via wire transfer or a prepaid card. They also typically alert individuals of unpaid taxes by mail, not phone.
