(State) LIHEAP Officials say utility rate payers behind on their monthly bills to rate regulated utilities, has hit an all time high. Jerry McKim, Bureau Chief of Iowa's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program says figures for December 2013 show $34.8 Million is owed to energy companies, which he says concerns him.
"Primarily because historically the highest monthly totals reported of past due amounts by the rate regulated utilities are January, February, and March so if we are looking at an all time record for December I am a little conference about what we are going to be seeing in January and February when those reports come out."
McKim says 60,000 rate payers have signed up for low income energy assistance with LI-HEAP. He says you can call them at 515-281-3861 if you need to sign up for the program.
