(Des Moines) A mini-preview of a possible senate debate over raising the minimum wage took place this morning. Burlington Democrat Tom Courtney taking to the floor to call for a hike over time to about ten-bucks an hour.
"Those folks, they don't go buy a new car, they don't go to Tahiti, they don't buy a villa in Spain. They go down to the local store and buy an extra sandwich for their kids, and extra pizza, a maybe and extra pair of blue jeans. That money gets spent in the community."
...But, Ottumwa Republican Mark Chelgren claims not everyone benefits from a hike in the minimum wage...
"I know in my district I know an awful lot of people who rely on fixed incomes, a lot of people who are retired, people who depend upon the generousity of others and the tax dollar. Those rates aren't going up so that sandwich and those blue jeans are going to actually cost them more and put more of a strain on them."
...Meanwhile, Democrats in the house have already filed another effort to raise the minimum wage in their chamber.
