(State) A lot of bank customers, worried about the Target/debit card breach before Christmas, have been getting their cards re-issued by their bank. John Sorenson of the Iowa Bankers Association says the banks are very good at monitoring for any suspicious activity...but the customers have a responsibility too...Sorenson says,
"So it is important for card holders to protect their information where they can to certainly protect their pin numbers if they are using debit cards at these locations, and monitor their account activity to make sure they are recognizing fraudulent activity as quickly as possible, and then contacting their financial institution whenever they become aware of that."
Sorenson says "Security is Expensive," -but well worth it, given the banks liability when there is a data breach of this kind.
The Shazam Network has indicated that the Target data breach so far affected 1,095 financial institiutions. The regional network indicates that it is likely every Iowa Financial Institution had a customer who shopped at Target during the breach, and has since requested a re-issue of their debit card to be safe.
