(GRIMES) KCCI reports that over 200 kids from 21 states competed in the USA Climbing National Qualifiers in the metro Saturday. Kids ages 9-19 participated in the event at the Climb Iowa facility in Grimes for a chance to go to the national competition in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Climbers were given 4 minutes to complete each of the physically challenging climbing routes. Participants stated the most difficult part of the event was staying mentally strong. 15 year old competitor Simon Hibbeler of Des Moines stated that you can train all you want and become strong, but it doesn’t matter at all unless you can keep a cool head. Recently, climbing participation has increased nationwide, going from 21,000 climbers to 47,000 in three years. The final qualifying round is scheduled for Sunday morning, where 70 of the 200 climbers will receive an invitation to the USA Climbing Nationals.
