(Des Moines) The Governor's Office Thursday released a statement saying that Iowa Department of Public Health Director Mariannette Miller-Meeks was stepping down from her state post. The statement said she was leaving to pursue "Opportinities outside state government." And While she didn't announce her intention...speaking to reporters at an event Thursday afternoon, the Governor said she was running for the second congressional district seat now held by Democrat Dave Loebsack.
"She's going to run for congress. I think she's a very capable and very good director of the Iowa Department of Public Health. She's been very involved in helping us with our goal to become the healthiest state in the nation. I don't believe in holding people back when they have an opportunity."
Miller-Meeks has faced Loebsack before. She was unsuccessful in a campaign against him in 2008.
