(Atlanitc ) Secretery of State Matt Schultz was in Atlantic Thursday afternoon after formally announcing his candidacy for Iowa's Third Congressional District today. The stop was part of a tour with appearances in Glenwood, Red Oak, Atlantic, Guthrie Center, Perry, and Des Moines.
Shultz says the decision to run was simple.
"When Tom Latham stepped down, I looked at the fact that Washinton is broken. With him stepping down, I was concerned about the fact that a democrat could win this seat. The reason why that concerned me is that I feel like the house of representatives is the only thing that is holding the damn from breaking. The only thing that is keeping the president and Harry Reid in check."
He says he talked to his wife and kids and felt like it was what he was supposed to do.
"It's my goald to represent the third district and go to Washington and fix Washington. First, repealing Obamacare is number one. We need a system that is a free market system for health insurance where people can by health insurance across state lines. Where small businesses can group together to buy insurance for their employees."
Controlling spending would be a top priority for Shultz. He says there is no revenue problem but rather a spending problem that needs to be fixed.
"And I think the first thing we need to do is pass a constitutional amendment for a balanced budget. Force Congress and force the president to balance the budget. I think that's something we need to do. That's something I'm going to be focused on. It's something my kids will tell you, they've trained me pretty well in saying 'No', and it's something we really need is someone to go to Washington and is willing to say no."
Also on Shultz's agenda is to have a constitutional amendment for term limits. He says for every good legislator who has been there a long time there are ten bad ones and we need new people with energy and new ideas.
