(Elk Horn) It’s that time of year when school districts across the state begin the process of Teacher salary negotiations. The Exira-EHK community school district is no exception. The districts Super Board will be gathering this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the middle school to hear the teacher’s proposal.
Exira/EHK Superintendent Dean Schnoes says there will be two open meetings presented by the teachers and two open meetings presented by the school board if need be.
“Normally you try and get as much done as you can in the open meetings,” stated Schnoes. “We go into closed meetings to try and finalize the points in the contract.”
And Schnoes says that can be everything from salaries, insurance, wording, school calendar, days off ect….
“You just have to be careful with what you put into the contract because as most people know once something goes into a contract it’s hard to get it out of there.”
Schnoes says this is just the starting process and the board will go into closed session following the presentation this evening and compare information. The board will then present the teachers negotiating team with a date and a time for the Super Board’s response.
“We are starting to work on our budget and a lot of that is dictated by the number of students,” Schnoes said. “There is only so much money to work with so we have to be very careful through the negotiations that we stay within our limits, while still providing a quality education for our students.”
Dean Schnoes says the goal is to have the contract’s finalized by March 15.
