(Council Bluffs) Iowa Secretary of State and former Council Bluffs City Councilman, Matt Schultz, formally announced his candidacy for Iowa’s Third Congressional District today.
With the support of family, friends, and activists Schultz decided to run for the third Congressional district after Rep. Tom Latham announced his retirement in December 2013. In 2010, Schultz won election as Iowa Secretary of State, beating the incumbent Democrat despite being outspent 5:1.
Following Schultz’s announcement in Council Bluffs in this morning he will tour the Third District with stops in Glenwood, Red Oak, Atlantic, Guthrie Center, and Perry, ending the day in Des Moines.
Raised in the Third District, Schultz has spent his life serving the people of central and southwest Iowa. Before being elected as Iowa Secretary of State, Schultz served five years as a city councilman in Council Bluffs where he successfully worked to cut the city tax levy every year. Schultz is an Eagle Scout and attended BYU-Idaho, the University of Iowa and Creighton University School of Law. He currently resides in Madison County with his wife, Zola, and their five children.
