(Des Moines) Now that the “Polar Vortex” is behind us and a new one-day record was set for energy usage, the hope is that the rest of January will be milder to average out heating bills. Tina Potthoff, with MidAmerican Energy, says they were ready for the cold weather.
“We spend year long when it comes to getting our facilities ready, other operations, management procedures, just protocols… this is what we prepare for,” said Potthoff. “We didn’t have any surprises with the frigid weather. All of our facilities worked as they were supposed to. We did, however, see more consumption and hopefully that will go down as the weather warms up.”
Some power lines did break from the low temperatures, but power was quickly restored and January 6th, 2014 will go into their record book as having used 10 percent more energy than any other day in the history of the company.
