MORTALITY RATES FOR FALLS FOR OLDER ADULTS IS HIGHER THAN NORMAL
(Atlantic) Cass County deaths and hospitalizations due to falls in residents over age 65 are high. The Cass County death rate is 113.9 versus 69.5 statewide. The Cass County hospitalization rate is 1487.1 versus 1175.2 statewide. That is according to the Iowa Department of Health from 2002-2006, “Falls in Iowa --Death and Hospitalization Rates.”
Cass County Community Health Systems Coordinator Denise Coder says, “We want to make sure that there are things that we don’t trip on in our homes and we want to make sure that we aren’t taking medications incorrectly that could cause us to be a little disoriented and make us fall a little easier and that kind of thing.”
