AUDUBON POLICE WARN OF FRAUDULENT SOFTWARE
(AUDUBON) The Audubon Police Department is reminding residents to be wary of fraudulent internet software.
An Audubon resident downloaded what she believed to be a valid security program that ended up being fake and produced a viral malware. A program titled “Windows 7 Recovery” was introduced on the computer screen advising her that her computer need to be downloaded to better the computer’s performance. When downloaded, this program introduces Trojan viruses into the system, which in turn creates connection problems and may disrupt the entire hard drive if not dealt with in a timely manner.
Not only does this fraudulent download create dismay with the computer, this person had to buy the program by way of a debit/credit card, which in turn can put the person at risk of losing more than just the cost of the program.
