(Des Moines) The Internal Revenue service announced this week new rules that could prevent some conservative groups in Iowa from taking part in any elections.
The proposed rules affect 501c4 organizations and say they can’t keep their tax exempt status if they are involved in any activity that contains a candidate’s name. Nick Ryan, the founder of one of the bigger organizations of this kind; The American Future Fund, says it’s a continuation of the IRS’ harassment of conservative groups that came to light earlier this year.
“Unfortunately it appears that the same bureaucrats that attempted to suppress the speech of conservative groups in recent years and recent scandals, which has been well documented, have now put together even new rules that apply only to c4 groups, which are largely conservative groups, and they don’t apply to liberal groups, like labor unions, and I think that’s a huge problem,” stated Ryan.
He said the proposed rules are written, the league of women voters of Iowa would be barred from sponsoring candidate debates. He says if the rules become permanent, he expects they’ll be challenged in court.
