OPERATION LIFESAVER: STAY OFF! STAY AWAY! STAY ALIVE!
(AMES) The Iowa Department of Transportation would like to remind the public that fishing is not allowed off of Iowa bridges.
The DOT says it is unsafe and illegal to fish off of a public road or street bridge, and illegal trespassing to be on a railroad right of way. This reminder comes from a recent incident of a woman being struck by a train while fishing off of a railroad bridge in northeast Iowa, the woman fortunately survived the incident.
Operation Lifesaver, a national non-profit organization that advocates rail safety, urges pedestrian safety with their message, “Stay Off! Stay Away! Stay Alive!”
The DOT is urging anglers and others to utilize public access points to Iowa’s rivers, streams and lakes. Or, see permission from the local landowner. Vehicles should not be parked on the roadway shoulder, which is limited to emergency use only.
