PARK AND REC POSITION DISCUSSED AT MONDAYS’ BOARD MEETING
(Atlantic) Atlantic Park and Rec Director Travis Garrett told the Board of Directors at Monday night’s meeting that he has received 14-solid applicants for the Directors job so far. The question is what the new director’s job description will be. Discussion continued at Monday night’s meeting about the possibility of the Nishna Valley Family YMCA taking over some or all of the recreational activities.
Dan Haynes, Executive Director of the Nishna Valley Family YMCA attended the meeting Monday night.
“We’re not looking to take anything from the Park and Rec. Board if you guys don’t want us involved with anything that’s certainly fine with us too, we’ve got plenty of stuff to do, but if you want us to help with stuff then we’ll sit at the table and discuss whatever you want us to discuss,” said Haynes.
The Park Board is already searching for a new pool manager, which is something that has been discussed with the “Y.”
“Obviously the pool in itself is quite the entity and then the Rec. programs are as well and we’ll have to kind of figure out if you have vested interest in one or the other or both,” said Garrett.
Haynes said, “Well I would think if you’re going to do one you may as well do everything and get all the recreation under one house.”
Park and Rec. board member Stuart Dusenberry wants to make sure that if the recreation end of it is turned over to the “Y” that costs remain the same.
“My biggest concern as the Park and Rec. Department is to me I think it is our mission to provide activities and opportunities for youth at low cost or no cost, it is our public parks and our tennis courts and swimming pools,” said Dusenberry.
Atlantic City Administrator Doug Harris suggested the discussion during the April 5 meeting. Harris says the problem is costs are going up and resources are not. He suggested the board discuss sharing staff with the Nishna Valley Family YMCA.
The discussion will continue on the subject. The deadline for Park and Rec Director Applications is April 29.
