COUNTY HEALTH RANKINGS – CASS COUNTY 43RD OF 99
(ATLANTIC) According to the latest county health rankings, Cass County ranks 43rd out of the 99 counties in the state.
Cass County Community Public Health Coordinator Denise Coder says this ranking obviously means that the county is in the upper half of all the counties which is something to be proud of, but it also means there are some things they need to be working on.
Coder said some of the lowest indicators in the county health rankings also showed up as issues on the recent community health assessment.
“Some of those issues were adult smoking; particularly for women who are pregnant, we have increasing teen birth rates and sexually transmitted diseases and sometimes those two coincide,” said Coder. “Certainly poverty continues to be an issue and its affecting people’s abilities to practice healthy behaviors and we recently also did our county survey last summer and that really highlighted some of the behaviors that are contributing to some of these diseases and death rates; behaviors such as people not exercising and not having access to healthy food.”
Coder says these indicators have become focus issues for them for improvement opportunities. She said the public will be seeing more communications from Cass County Public Health regarding these issues and some of their improvement strategies.
“One of the other issues we identified in our community health assessment was the fact that our public needs to know more about the issues that we are facing in public health and they need to know the extent of the issues and what opportunities for improvements they can be accessing along the way,” said Coder.
