GOVERNMENT FACES POSSIBLE SHUTDOWN
(DES MOINES) The Governments spending authority expires Friday, which could result in a government shutdown.
If a shutdown would occur, the government would have to cut staffing across the executive branch, including workers at the White House and Civilian employees at the Defense Department. Congress and the federal court system would also be affected by the shutdown. U.S. military troops, including those in the war zones, would receive only one week’s pay instead of two in their next paycheck. The IRS will not process paper returns during the shutdown, so those expecting a refund should file electronically and ask for the money to be deposited directly into their bank accounts. National Parks around the country would close, the federal housing administration would stop guaranteeing loans, and meatpackers may be affected because meat processors cannot operate without the inspectors on the job.
The last government shutdown occurred 15 years ago and lasted around 21 days.
