CAM SCHOOL BOARD SETS TAX LEVY
(Anita) The newly formed CAM School Board lowered the districts property tax rate to $12.67 trumping the previous rate of $16.67 for Anita School District patrons, and $14.50 for Cumberland and Massena property owners. CAM Schools Superintendent Steve Pelzer says there are a number of reasons for the lower tax rate.
“There is an automatic $1.00 tax break for schools that consolidate on the uniform levy,” said Pelzer. In addition, both districts levied for about $800,000 and after the two combined, that levy dropped to around $400,000, which was a significant decrease.
Pelzer says by putting the two districts together it allowed them to combine some of their assets. “For instance one district might have been healthy in one area where the other district wasn’t. We were just able to reduce a lot of the property tax levy that we would not have been able to do if we remained separate districts.”
School District voters from Anita and Cumberland @ Massena went to the polls last September and voted to abandon the Whole-Grade Sharing agreement in favor of Consolidation.
