(Des Moines) Every newspaper from the New York Times on down is faced with the same problem, declining ad revenue and circulation as they do battle with online news delivered for free. ISU College of Business Professor Tony Townsend says raising rates is one of the few things they can do to bring in more money.
"Putting it online for free obviously gets some advertising and stuff, but I think they are looking at the edges and some places where they might be able to pull some additional revenue off of that content they have created."
Townsend says there is a niche market unserved by newspapers and online outlets, local neighborhood and small town news. The problem is how to cover it and market it and still make money.
