PE ADDED TO AUDUBON HIGH SCHOOL GPA
(AUDUBON) Audubon High School students will now have Physical Education efforts added to their Grade Point Average.
Audubon High School P.E. Teacher Sue Hawkins said last fall they received a PE4Life grants and they surveyed 14 schools around the area and within their conference and they had 12 schools respond. Out of the 12 schools, 9 of them already had P.E. added on their GPA, so Hawkins felt that this was a good transition time. She said not much will change as far as how the students are graded.
“Their effort is a big part of it, but at the same time we can test them on knowledge of fitness components, knowledge of muscle groups, rubrics on how to use equipment and also our 9th and 10th graders have a health component that we figure into their grade, so there are a lot of things we can grade them on besides effort alone,” said Hawkins.
Hawkins says she integrates PE4Life in her classes, which includes little added things like heart monitors and pedometers to show kids what is out there that they can use for the rest of their life. PE4Life is a community wide effort to reinforce kids to have a lifelong fitness and wellness plan.
