(Atlantic) It was a trip down memory lane for many who attended a threshing demonstration at the Cass County Fair Sunday morning. A large crowd gathered as volunteers gathered up the bundles of shocked oats and hauled by hay rack to a threshing machine for harvest.
Earl Wiechman, a retired farmer from Atlantic was sixteen years old in the 1930’s when starting pitching in on the threshing crew.
“It was quite a get together, 8-or-10 farmers would start on one end and end up on the other end,” stated Wiechman, who remembered the good meals…and…“we went to a lot of work to get a little bit of oats,” he said with a chuckle.
Grounds Committee member Alan Zellmer speared headed the demonstration says they will be selling the oats and the straw.
“Those people that want to buy some need to contact me and we will come up with some kind of a price,” stated Zellmer. “The straw will be baled next week and Renew Ag has agreed to market it until they are gone.”
Zellmer says all proceeds from the sale of the straw and oats will go back into the fair grounds.
