(DES MOINES) State Highway Patrol leaders are stepping up to eliminate fatalities along Interstate 80 across the United States.
Patrick Hoye, Bureau Chief with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, said the eleven state highway patrol agencies along Interstate 80, and several traffic safety partners, have dedicated an increased presence during the eight day “I-80 Challenge”.
“It is a project that was conceived here in Iowa and it’s a multi-state, multi-agency, high visibility, traffic enforcement operation. Our goal is to increase enforcement presence on Interstate 80,” explained Hoye. “The challenge begins on July 24th at midnight and will run through midnight on July 31st.”
Hoye said one thing motorists in Iowa will notice is messages on the dynamic message boards. He said, “They are not being used for safety messages and that’s something that we’re going to try; reminders of slowing down, buckling up, not driving impaired… those types of safety messages.”
