(DES MOINES) The Office of the Governor and the Iowa State Patrol encourage Iowans, who have seen or experienced an act of heroism first hand, to nominate a deserving individual for a Governor’s Lifesaving Award. The deadline to submit nominations is April 15, 2011. The incident must have occurred between January 1 of the previous year and April 15th of the current year. All nominations must be received by April 15th of the current year. However, other incidents not occurring within this time period may be eligible for an Outstanding Service Award.
The Governor’s Lifesaving Award Program was begun in the 1970’s to recognize the extraordinary individuals who work and live among us. Since 1996, more than 400 deserving Iowans have received this prestigious award at a ceremony hosted by the Governor at the Iowa State Fair.
The three types of awards are; Lifesaving With Valor - Awarded to those individuals who at the risk of their own life, attempted to save that of another individual. Lifesaving - Awarded to those individuals who have attempted to save the life of another individual, but did not put their own life in jeopardy during the rescue.
Meritorious - Awarded to those individuals in recognition of courageous and unselfish service rendered during a time of distress.
