(Elk Horn) Now that the reorganization has been approved, the next step for the Exira/EHK School District is to focus on the September School Board elections. Both School Boards met in joint session last night. First and foremost is the election of school board members.
“We have to get through the September School Board elections first,” stated Exira/EHK Superintendent Dean Schnoes. Once we have the five member board for each district taken care of, three members from each board will be selected to serve. In addition a seventh member must be appointed by both school boards to fill the at-large seat.
Schnoes says after that both districts have only three more board policies to review and go through. We will get those done so that when we hit July 1, 2014, other than having the official title of the school district we will be taken care of.
Schnoes says they have already started working with their financial people and start the process of combining the financial books of both districts and that won’t be official until July 1. However, Schnoes says the budget needs to be set in January and February for the school that will now have one budget instead of two.
In other activity, John Leader was sworn in as an appointed member of the board. Leader will take the seat vacated by Mark Smith who had to resign after moving out of the district. Leader will fill out Smith’s term which will expire in two more years.
