SPRING PLANTING AROUND THE CORNER
(OAKLAND) Spring is in the air and it may have you gardeners in the mood to start planting.
Debbie Henningsen, owner of Blossoms in Oakland, said you can go ahead and get your garden cleaned up, but you’ll have to be patient when it comes to planting.
“This beautiful weather makes us want to get out there and start planting and working in the garden, but it’s still awful early to do that, but there are a lot of great things we can do outdoors in preparation so then when we know it’s hopefully going to be frost free we’re ready to go,” said Henningsen. “They can trim back their perennials, that’s good to do right now and it’s not going to harm anything, go ahead and get them cut back and that new growth will be coming up if it hasn’t already.”
Henningsen said if you want to plant seeds, you can go ahead and get started by planting them inside either in a greenhouse or in your home. She said cold crop plants such as cabbage could be planted now, but it’s still a little too early to be planting anything outside.
