(State) The 4th of July weekend is always among the busiest boating weekends of the year. The Iowa DNR would like to remind boaters that safety should come first. Southwest Fisheries Supervisor Chris Larsen provides us with some safety tips.
"Number one, make sure you wear a life jacket. The they make today are very light weight and comfortable. The saying is, 'It floats, you don't.' Make sure it has the USCG seal of approval on it."
And of course…
"Alcohol and boating don't mix. Wind, sun, glare and heat can enhance the effects of alcohol hindering the operator's ability to make decisions."
There is also a boating education course you can take online at iowadnr.gov.
