(EXIRA) 4th of July events kick off in Exira this afternoon.
Glass House Prophet, a band from Panora, will be playing in the City Park from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. along with a community barbecue from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Kiddie Parade begins at 6:00 p.m. and then the Street Dance featuring Stone Throw begins at 9:00 p.m.
Thursday kicks off with the Foot Races at 9:00 a.m. Then, Exira’s famous parade begins at 10:30 a.m.
Abby Rasmussen, President of the Exira Community Club, said the Grand Marshall of the parade is Hallie Christofferson.
“She is a Jr. at Iowa State University, she’s an alumni of Exira, people probably know her for her basketball skills,” said Rasmussen. “She also helped the Community Club this year and last year some. She designed our Road Run t-shirts and this year she did all of our marketing things; so she created the poster and we’re selling hats this year.”
Rasmussen added, “When we asked her we said we’d be more than happy if she wanted to bring any of her Iowa State Basketball teammates, so she has 5 or 6 other Cyclones coming down and they’ll be riding on the little red fire truck and signing autographs in the park later that day… so we’re pretty excited about that.”
Rasmussen said they are encouraging businesses and groups to have floats in the parade. She said it is free to enter and a prize will be awarded to the best themed float. The theme is Spirit of America.
Events continue Thursday with local entertainment in the City Gazebo from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Grand River Rodeo begins at 1:30 p.m. at Kickapoo Park. Entertainment by Roger Burger will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the High School Football Field. Fireworks begin at around 9:45 p.m.
