(Atlantic) Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey and Congressman Tom Latham were in Atlantic this morning to meet with Iowa Western Community College officials. The topic of conversation was improving STEM Education.
Iowa Western Community College professor of Design Technology Joe Vandstrom explains STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math,
"We are seeing that there are jobs growing, particularly in the Midwest, but those industries are STEM fields so they there is a little bit more education needed. We are seeing there is a big gap between the workers who are unemployed right now and there skill sets to apply for these jobs and get them."
So the goal is to better train not only K-12 students but also adults. Iowa Western Community College has been reaching out to more and more prospective students for their Design Technology Program.
Vandstrom admits there were kinks to work out in the first year of the program but says the students were very flexible and were able to use any obstacles as learning experiences.
