(ATLANTIC) A fire destroyed a barn at 57202 Indian Creek Road west of Atlantic this morning.
The Atlantic Fire Department was called out at around 9:15 a.m. for mutual aid with the Marne Fire Department. Tim Cappel, 2nd Assistant Chief with the Atlantic Fire Department, said the barn was fully engulfed when they arrived.
“As we left town and started heading out this direction we could totally see it over the horizon so we knew we had a big one. We made sure we had plenty of tankers come in at that time,” said Cappel. “Once we got on scene the barn was pretty much at a total loss at that time. We got a defensive attack just trying to cool a bunch of burnt hay and straw that was inside.”
Cappel said they are unsure what may have caused the fire, but the resident had started a brush pile about 150 to 200 yards away from the barn which may have contributed.
“The only thing we’re kind of coming up with now is maybe a rodent or raccoon or something might have run up from one building to get back up into the hay mound after he got hot… right now until we can really get in there it’s going to be undetermined,” said Cappel.
There was no damage to any other buildings on the property and no injuries were reported.
