HARLAN HIRES FORMER RED OAK VOLLEYBALL COACH
(Harlan) Harlan has hired former Red Oak Volleyball Coach Angie Spangenberg as the Middle School Dean of Students/Success Coordinator and Head Volleyball Coach.
Spangenberg, currently the High School Dean of Students/Activities Director at Red Oak, was the Head Volleyball Coach from 1990-2007. Her career record is 425-119 with 9 state tournament appearances and 5 conference championships.
Harlan Athletic Director Mitch Osborne says he is elated to have Angie Spangenberg on board at Harlan.
“It’s a home run. To me it’s like getting Steve Daeges in baseball, you get a Curt Bladt in football and that’s what Angie Spangenberg is to the volleyball world out there,” said Osborne.
Osborne says Spangenberg is one of the top three High School Volleyball Coaches in the State.
“I’ve observed her coaching for several years and I love her poise, her mannerisms, and obviously she brings a family atmosphere to it, but in the same token they are fundamentally sound and they get after it,” said Osborne.
Osborne says he approached Spangenberg about the job.
“I actually started the conversation, once we found out what teaching openings we had around February 1st after retirements, I called her for one reason was to get names of people that would fit the bill and obviously she has a lot of lineage out there and obviously her daughter Paige’s name came up right away, that’s one I had on the tip of my tongue and several others,” said Osborne.
But, Osborne says his first choice was Spangenberg who retired as Red Oak's Volleyball Coach to watch her daughter play college ball.
“Ultimately what I ended the conversation with was ‘Angie obviously my number one choice for this job is actually you and I really want you to think about it and we’ll go from there’ and so we continued with conversations and looking at how things would work out, and they did and we’re very, very excited,” said Osborne.
It will be approved at the school board mtg. on March 21st.
