(Atlantic) The Atlantic School Board narrowly passed a resolution Monday night to add four additional extra-curricular activities to the list.
The board voted three-to-two to add dance and archery to the 2013-2014 school year, and swimming and bowling in 2014-2015.
“I have heard nothing but great things about bowling not only in our conference but at the state level as well,” explained Atlantic Activities Director Josh Rasmussen. “The leaders at the State Athletic Association and Girls Union say it is one of the best sportsmanship programs that they have.”
Rasmussen says the stipulation is that 10-boys and 10-girls must participate to make it happen to make those programs happen in Atlantic.
“As a board member I want to help kids and get as many of them involved in as many things as they can in order to make that connection to the school.” stated School President Kristy Pellett.
The four new activities will cost the district $60,000 a year which would come out of the general fund.
“I have a difficult time spending $60,000 every year on more activities with the exception of bowling which is one activity I could support,” said Board member Phil Hascall.
Hascall and Dennis Davis voted no. Rod Hartwig, Josh McLaren and Pellett voted yes for adding the four additional activities.
