(Des Moines) Big decisions need to be made by some farmer’s soon as the deadline for crop insurance nears; June 15 is the final planting date for soybeans.
Mark Johnson, Agronomist at Iowa State University says if you choose not to plant this year-you still need to maintain that land.
“You want to have some kind of a root system down in that soil to keep it healthy and keep he micro-organisms functioning so that next year when you plant a crop everything is in good shape,” Stated Johnson.
He reminds farmers that if they take insurance, they cannot harvest that land until after November 1st.
