(Des Moines) The struggle continues for some to even get a crop in the ground this spring. For others it’s a matter of how much damage was done and what had been planted last week.
Statewide, only half a day was suitable for fieldwork. The latest crop report indicates 88-percent of the corn is in the ground compared to the average of 99-percent. And 73-percent of what’s been planted has emerged which is also behind the average.
Crop ratings vary widely from 57-percent good to excellent with the rest fair, poor or very poor. Just 44-percent of the soybeans have been planted compared to the average 99-percent. And just 23-percent have emerged, the lowest level since 1996.
It is not determined how much of the crop has been damaged. That will not be known until all of the water is off the fields.
