(Atlantic) The Free Summer Lunch Program starts this morning at the Nishna Valley Family YMCA in Atlantic. Atlantic Community Schools Food Service Director Dee Ann Schreiner says they expect to serve 180-students.
“It is really important that the kids get a well balanced meal during the summer,” stated Schreiner. “We find that a lot of kids don’t get a balanced meal or sometimes don’t get a meal at all. So at least we can provide one nutritious meal a day.”
Schreiner says the meals, funded by the USDA, are available to any Cass County child up to the age of 18. Hy Vee is catering the meals from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A snack program is also available at 2:30 p.m. each day at the “Y.”
