(Area) A recent report indicates more than 50 sex offenders in Iowa have permits to carry guns in public.
While that statistic might be alarming to some, Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren has this stance on the matter,
"There is such a wide range of sex offenders and their level of violence that it's a difficult question. Most of the time if a sex offender is violent they will already be convicted of a felony which will automatically void them from getting a carry permit.”
McLaren says there are occasions where a sex offender does plead to a misdemeanor and while he doesn’t like it, he can’t think of instance in Cass County that is currently a problem.
"If you are truly a violent person and we knew that and you are a sex offender you would have plead to a felony. There is an isolated instance out there in Iowa where it is a concern, I guess not locally."
When it comes to obtaining gun permits, Iowa changed from a ‘may issue’ to a ‘shall issue’ state on January 1st, 2011.
